On This Day...

A DAILY FACTOID OF OUR ART HISTORY

Dec. 2

Samuel Jepperson was born on this day (1854). A self-taught painter and musician--his parent forbade his artistic curiosity--he made his own paintbrushes from chicken feathers and his own paints from crushed berries. He said, "I no longer set the price [for my paintings]. I am always happy to sell one, for that means I can make another. When I do not sell and find myself short, I scrape off an old one or paint it over, for I must paint." "Samuel Jepperson, Provo Primitive," by Glen Nelson, Mormon Artists Group, Glimpses, February 2013.
